You were expecting a punch line, right? No joke. My Sophie is allergic to the cat. She gets watery eyes and sneezes soon after that cat gets up on the bed, itches like mad and has a new bald spot. Sooo, we went back to the vet today to ask if that was possible and it is. Since Sophie started these symptoms right when the cat decided to move indoors and sleep with us at night, she thought it was pretty likely that Sophie is allergic to the cat.
We’re going to try a few things, including Benadryl for Sophie and frequent grooming for the cat. (Seriously, you can give dogs Benadryl. Don’t do it without consulting your vet and getting dosage instructions, though.) If these things don’t work, I guess the kitty gets locked out of the bedroom.
Sophie adores her and didn’t seem to be bothered when they played outside. I guess containing all of that saliva and dander in one room for 8 hours at night is what pushes the allergy reactions over the edge.

I’m not usually very optimistic about all of those “miracle cures” for dog coat and skin problems. However, my poor Sophie has terrible allergies and hot spots and was starting to look like wool at a moth convention, even with constant oatmeal baths, an expensive new dog food and cortizone shots. So, when I saw the Pets Alive supplement from Gardens Alive, I decided it was worth a try.
Well, it has been about three weeks and Sophie has hair back on her ears and the big bald spot by her tail that never went away is now gone. Her coat is shiny and she doesn’t itch as often, although she still itches some. Consider me impressed!
If you’d like to try Pets Alive, you can order directly from Gardens Alive.

Poor Sophie started itching as soon as the heat went on this year. My vet recommended we try a weekly bath using a shampoo with oatmeal in it. He suggested leaving the shampoo on her body for 5 full minutes to allow the oatmeal to really work.

Ask your veterinarian about using a Preventic dog collar. This way, your dog receives small, continuous doses of the same ingredient in the Mitaban dip that helps destroy the Demodectic mange mites.
