I had a very worrying question from a reader today:
How do i know if my dog has rabies?
Many people think that rabies is something that kind of went out with Old Yeller. It isn’t. This summer, my neighbor had a raccoon with rabies on her porch. Feral cats and stray dogs can also really cause problems with rabies.
There is a list of symptoms, including the classic foaming at the mouth and odd behavior. However, if you suspect your dog has been exposed to rabies, you should get to your veterinarian immediately, even if there are no symptoms. This is especially essential if your dog is not up to date on shots.

Hi I have a 3 year old Golden Retriever — we adopted her when she was 1 year old — she has been spayed, we had a 15 yr. old collie retriever mix when we got her and they got a long fine until one day the old dog was getting sign when she did the coughing/throwing up thing my golden retriever attacked her — The golden grabbed her by the neck she was really too old to defend her self — this happen a few more occassions and we kept them seperate we have since lost the old dog due to cancer. Now my son has moved in with us and he has a 2 year old Chow/Shepherd mix. The two dogs have been together from the beginning when we adopted them it was just a few months apart and we have had them together several times. Well my son moved in with us in October and the two dogs have done very well play well together and do get rough some times but usually break it up on their own. The Chow/Shephard is a more aggressive player then the golden the he pulls on the Golden ears and legs all the time but the golden has dealt with it. Well 2 nights ago the Chow/Shephard was starting to throw up some yellow slimmy stuff and the Golden attached him — she grabbs him by the throat and don’t let go no matter when you do. She gets pretty beat up when it is all done and said and he seem to be ok — but then we waited and kept them apart for hours and when we brough them back they seemed ok all day and then eveining but late then next night when the Chow/Shephard coughed it happened again — I was alone and I was having a real hard time seperating them — It looked like she was choking the Chow/Shephard. We have then seperated now but don’t know what we can do — will they ever get along again? And why is it that the Golden does this attack on a sick dog??? I appreciate any help or suggestions you can give us. Oh and the chow/shephard is a male and neutered also.
