Reasons Not to Buy a Dog
06/26/2007
If you are on the fence about buying a dog, maybe you simply aren’t ready to own one. Here are a few really bad reasons to buy a dog:
1. Fashion accessory a la Paris Hilton - If you think dogs are just something cute to carry around, get a new purse or bracelet instead. Paris had a perfectly lovely little dog that she traded in because he got too heavy. Gee, where does that leave my 65 pound Standard Poodle?
2. Home security - Dogs aren’t just a way to keep your home safe. They need affection and fun, too. If you aren’t prepared to give your dog a little love, have an elecronic security system installed instead.
3. Your child wants a puppy - A dog is a huge responsibility. Young children are rarely prepared to care for a new puppy on their own, so be prepared to do most of the work yourself or follow up to be sure your child is doing things right. If you don’t feel up to the challenge, you may want to wait until your child is older to buy the puppy.
4. You want to entertain your kids - If your children have never owned a pet before, plan to spend a lot of time discussing how to care for your new puppy and overseeing playtime. You don’t want to end up with a nippy dog or one that cowers and shakes because your children didn’t know howto play with their dog and accidentally injured it.
